The disparate nature of unmanaged data repositories hinders an organization’s ability to purge unneeded data because the size and nature of the repositories make it cost-prohibitive to evaluate the data for disposition. However, if shared file data repositories continue to be left unmanaged, organizations will have vast wastelands of unstructured electronic information.  (more)

The Washington State Archives recently published a records management advice sheet entitled “Electronic Records Management: Blogs, Wikis, Facebook, Twitter & Managing Public Records” that provides guidance to state and local government agencies regarding the retention of public records of posts to social networking websites such as blogs, wikis, Facebook, and Twitter.  (more)

Lax controls in business processes or errors in technology systems are the primary cause loss of privacy related data. It seems, therefore, that simply tightening these controls and resolving system issues would prevent these kinds of problems. Gov. Bobby Jindal’s legislation dealing with access to records in the Governor’s Office won final legislative endorsement Wednesday.

Approval came amid warnings from a north Louisiana lawmaker that the changes “will take the state of Louisiana from sunshine to moonshine,” keeping people in the dark on Governor’s Office dealings.

“I’m telling you, Cuba has got more sunshine in the law than we have in Louisiana if you pass this bill,” said state Sen. Robert Adley, R-Benton.  (more)
